7 Reasons Why You Should be Treated with Hijama

Hijama or cupping is an ancient practice of medical where suction is applied to an area of the body and then small incisions are made, suction is reapplied and the blood from under the surface of the skin is released. This treatment has been practiced in many different cultures throughout history and has a high status in Islamic tradition as it was given as a command to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for his ummah (followers) to use as a cure. There are many hadith which refer to the practices of cupping being done on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions at various time and for various different issues.
After the advancement of modern medicine the practice of hijama cupping died out and people forgot about this highly beneficial treatment. Many Muslims today are still reluctant to have hijama or have not ever been treated with it. Some have never heard of it and there are also those who see it as a primitive or even backwards treatment.
I am definitely an advocate for hijama and I believe that everyone should try hijama at least once in their life whether you have a medical condition or not.
Below are 7 reasons I think you should have hijama:
1-Hijama is a sunnah you will get rewarded for it
Hijama is a sunnah that was practiced by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was narrated that he said the angels told him that his nation should practice hijama when he was descending from the night journey. This shows the weight of how special and blessed this treatment is for us.
The prophet Muhammad ﷺ never did hijama for anyone but he had hijama performed on himself may times. There are many narrations that the prophet Muhammad and his companions had hijama on various occasions and for various reasons.
It is narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was on the night journey that the angels told him to practice cupping:
According to a hadeeth narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra’), but they said to me, ‘O Muhammad, tell your ummah to do cupping.’” (Reported by Ibn Maajah; it has corroborating evidence which strengthens it).
It is reported in Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best treatment you can use is cupping.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/126; Muslim, 1577)
2-It’s beneficial to your health
Hijama is beneficial for a multitude of health conditions ranging from diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, back pain, menstrual problems, headaches and so much more. I recommend that people who have chronic conditions have hijama regularly once every month or once every other month. And if you’re having hijama for muscular pain or a small injury then 3 months in a row once each month. At the very least it is a safe treatment that has very little side effects if any at all.
3-It’s very relaxing
We all have so much stress in our day to day lives and can often build up as tension in our muscles which if left untreated can lead to more serious issues such as frozen shoulder and twisted muscles. Hijama helps the body to relax. The suction of the cups when applied firmly enough help to pull the muscles upwards and helps relieve the tension in the muscles. I often have to keep clients talking so that they don’t fall asleep during the treatments when they are lying down. I get a lot of feedback about how well clients have slept after being treated with hijama.
I treat many mum's with hijama and pay close attention to the top of the back and the shoulders where tension build up especially when you’ve been doing a lot of housework, carrying children or sitting for long hours at a desk working. This is one of my staples when I treat clients, especially those who come to me just to try hijama out without having any medical conditions.
4-It’s a great form of self-care.
As women we often neglect ourselves and don’t take that time to pay attention to our health and or beauty. Hijama is a great treat as a detox which can be done and should be done in order to promote optimal health as part of your self-care routine. I recommend hijama for a healthy person 2-4 times a year. Try having hijama after a relaxing bath followed by a healthy and delicious nutritious meal at the weekend. You will sleep like a baby and feel amazing Insha Allah.
5-It’s good to detox the body
Hijama helps to purify the blood by ridding the body of toxins and stagnated blood. It helps the lymphatic drainage of the body and improves the circulation.
6-It’s a safe preventative treatment
Even if there is nothing physically, spiritually or mentally wrong with you hijama is beneficial as a detox and preventative treatment. Hijama helps the body by bringing it into a homeostatic state keeping everything at an optimal level and bringing balance.
7-It’s really nothing to be afraid of at all
Subhan Allah I have had so many clients who resisted having hijama for years out of fear and then after eventually having it they were so surprised by how relatively painless it is. Hijama can be uncomfortable if you’re not used to it but it isn’t painful. Many clients also find it ticklish and most feel so much lighter and relieved from tension after hijama.
